Bess was fortunate to be rescued by Vyolet Jean Savage, a caregiver, when she was wandering on the streets of Tennessee. Her life took a turn for the better after that, and she received the help she needed just in time. She was expecting 12 puppies, which was much more than the usual litter size of 6 to 8.
Bess faced many challenges during her pregnancy and delivery. One of her pups, Burrdie, got stuck in the birth canal for several hours, putting the lives of the others at risk. Vyolet recalled that the doctors warned her that some of the puppies might not survive.
The vet staff realized they needed more help to take care of Bess and her 12 pups, so they reached out to volunteers. The generous volunteers worked in shifts for weeks to assist Bess.
Bess and her pups received constant care and attention. They all grew healthier and stronger every day. None of the 12 puppies had any problems after birth; they clung to life and never gave up.
Burrdie was the only puppy in the litter who seemed fragile and weak. He struggled to come into the world and required special care. The volunteers fed him extra milk and gave him more attention. They also put a pink ribbon around his neck to identify him among his siblings.
Moving Forward
Bess was a loving and kind mother dog. She treated all her puppies with patience and gentleness, like a perfect mom. Even when she was clearly exhausted, she always checked on her puppies and responded to any noise they made.
Usually, when the puppies are old enough to leave their mother, they get adopted very fast. But this time, something different happened. Bess was the first one to find a forever home! Susan Zaleski and her family chose her and said they fell in love with her at first sight.
They saw how maternal Bess was and they called her a four-legged nanny. She had just given birth to 12 puppies, so it was obvious that Bess had a strong motherly instinct. They brought Bess to their home and she started to connect with her human sisters. She soon became protective and affectionate towards them. Meanwhile, Bess’s puppies were adopted by people who knew the Stewarts, so they were always close by, even though Bess didn’t know it.
A Joyful Gathering
Getting everyone together can be quite a challenge if you have a big family. But after 10 months of being adopted by different families, Bess and her puppies had a joyful gathering to celebrate the puppies’ first birthday and reunite with their momma dog.
It was a wonderful event and it makes you feel good to imagine how delighted Bess was to see her puppies. They were all healthy, strong, loved, and well-cared for by their new families. When Bess saw them after 10 months and recognized them, she almost yanked the leash from her owner’s hands trying to reach them all as quickly as possible.

Also, express gratitude for adoptive families like the Stewarts’ who take such good care of their dogs and inspire others to become dog owners as well to make a difference.
Being a dog owner is not easy, especially if you’re adopting. Every dog is unique and they have unique needs, but they all have a lot of love to give and they’re some of the most compassionate creatures on earth. It’s truly a joy to watch them grow and enjoy the many different ways they show you all the love you give them.
