Tiny dogs have a big friend in Bobby Humphreys, who runs the Big Guy Littles World Sanctuary. This place is devoted to caring for and finding new homes for Chihuahuas who have suffered or have special needs.
But Bobby never imagined he would be doing this a few years ago. As a big guy, he always liked Rottweilers, who matched his size and athleticism.
He didn't care much for smaller breeds and he often teased his male friends who had tiny dogs. But his life changed drastically. First, his 17-year marriage ended suddenly and he didn't expect that. He went through a dark period and even thought about suicide.
Bobby felt hopeless and said, "I lost faith in humanity. I wanted to end it." But a loyal friend named Connie stayed by his side, even when he was pushing everyone away in his pain. She had lost people to suicide before, so she knew the danger and didn't ignore it.
She taught Bobby what friendship really means and he's very thankful to have her in his life. When Connie had to move, she couldn't take her Chihuahua, Lady, with her, so she asked Bobby for a favor.
Now, Lady was not a very nice dog, especially with men, and Bobby didn't like her much either. He had heard many stories about her behavior, so he was sure he didn't want to be near this tiny dog. Also, Lady once ate Connie's son's chemotherapy medicine. She survived it, but Lady was never the same after that.
Bobby had never had a better friend than Connie, so he agreed to look after Lady until Connie could take her back. Lady was a spirited Chihuahua who arrived in her crate while Bobby was away at work, so he put her in front of the TV when he came home and she seemed very relaxed.
He took a chance and let Lady out of the crate. When Connie came to see them later that day, she saw the tiny Chihuahua on Bobby’s lap and they were watching TV together like old buddies.
Connie was amazed by her tiny dog’s behavior. Lady disliked everyone, but she bonded with Bobby right away and they were inseparable ever since. Bobby was still struggling with the pain and grief of his divorce at that point in his life. His heart was still shattered and he was still trying to figure out what went wrong.
He had many days when he couldn’t get up and go to work, but the one thing that made him happy was Lady. To his surprise, a tiny dog captured his heart. However, Bobby had to remember that Lady had a family and she would return to them eventually. So, he decided to look for a tiny dog of his own.
Bobby searched for a dog that resembled Lady or one that looked like a Minpin his grandfather used to own, named Lucy. The first dog he found was brown and tan. Her name was Kira and she came from a bad home. Also, she had no training.
His first encounter with Kira didn’t go as he expected it would. Bobby thought that every dog would react like Lady, instantly loving him regardless of how much they hated other people. But that wasn’t the case with Kira; she snarled and barked at him the whole time.
Bobby knew that most people would not want to adopt a small, furious dog like Kira. He chose to rescue her from a doubtful fate and try his best to make her more friendly. Kira snuggled with Bobby by the time they reached home.
Bobby had wanted to get a puppy, but Kira was older. He decided to look for another dog. He found Harley, but he soon realized something was wrong. The owners claimed the puppies were unplanned, but one of their kids revealed that they were breeding dogs incestuously. They were very weak as a result.
Bobby saw that the dogs were suffering from neglect and abuse, and he felt he had to do something. He took Harley, and then he went back to get Quinny from the same litter.
Bobby was still struggling with his emotional pain and his birthday that year was hard to cope with. He avoided social media and browsed Craigslist instead. He came across Lucy, who looked just like his grandfather's Minpin.
Lucy's owner was eager to find her a new home and she did not want to wait for Bobby. She said she would even reduce the fee if he came that day. So, Bobby drove for five hours on his birthday.
He learned that Lucy was found near a trailer park. The woman who found her asked around, but when she located the owner, she said she did not care about "that thing anymore". The woman talked to the neighbors and took Lucy to an emergency vet. She discovered that Lucy was used as a bait dog for training other dogs to fight.
When Bobby met Lucy, she was hungry, injured, and scared of people. But she still trusted him enough to snuggle in his arms. That's how he became her new owner.
Bobby had a passion for helping dogs who suffered from abuse, neglect, and abandonment. He founded Bug Guy Littles World Sanctuary, which he mostly paid for himself. Despite the financial difficulties, Bobby welcomed over 30 dogs into his care, and he didn't plan to stop.
Bobby felt that his work was rewarding and meaningful. He loved all the tiny dogs he rescued and found new homes for. They gave him so much joy and gratitude. He owed his life to a little Chihuahua, and now he devoted it to giving little dogs a second chance.
